If you must apply somthing use a good wax. Naphtha and cleaning once a year is plenty. I do use 3 in 1 in the beginning when I build and then black kiwi show wax and buff. WebI only do it on really messed up boards (no oil at all, was all gunky, really dry) and it helps the wood out a lot. You'd be just fine using mineral oil as well, I use Howard's lemon oil as it's mineral oil based from what I can tell.
